Ronaldinho, Best of the Best (20.12.2005)
The Barcelona forward was yesterday crowned FIFA’s World Player of the Year.
For the second time in a row, Ronaldinho has been named the best footballer in the world. The distinction was awarded to the 25-year-old yesterday during the FIFA World Player Gala in Zurich. The award came as no surprise to many. The Brazilian-born Barcelona striker has been in superlative form for both his team and country. Ronaldinho led Barcelona to the league title last season and, together with Cameroon’s forward Eto`o, has been in brilliant form so far this season.
The award was based on votes by national team coaches and captains from around the world from a list of three candidates drawn up by the world football governing body. It can be considered the icing on Ronalhinho’s cake. He won the 2005 edition of the prestigious Ballon d`Or award; the highest accolade available to a player plying his trade in Europe. He is also the 2005 FIFpro World Player of the year. Only France`s Zinedine Zidane (1998 and 2003) and fellow Brazilian Ronaldo (1996, 1997 and 2002) have won the FIFA player of the year award more than once since the vote was introduced in 1991. Seven

players have won both the world and European award in the same year - Marco Van Basten (NED/1992), Roberto Baggio (ITA/1993), George Weah (LBR/1995), Ronaldo (BRA/1997 and 2002), Zidane (FRA/1998) and Rivaldo (BRA/1999).
Ronaldinho`s Barcelona team-mate, Samuel Eto`o and Chelsea midfielder, Frank Lampard were the other two players on FIFA’s three-man shortlist. Lampard, the footballer of the year in England last season, came second to Ronaldinho for the European award. Despite losing out to his team mate, Cameroon’s Eto`o remains one of the most explosive players in world football. The Cameroon international`s 24 league goals for Barcelona last season fired the Catalans to their first title in six years and he is well on course to repeat the feat in the present campaign. He was named African Footballer of the Year for the second time in succession last February and is strongly fancied to win the award for a record-equalling third time in 2005. Lampard would have been the first Englishman to take the award while Eto`o the second African player, after Weah, to take the award.
The FIFA award has been won by a Spanish-based player for the last four years.
