Malawi help ex stars (15.06.2004)
Chibowa wants to make sure former stars can make ends meet
Malawi has come up with a unique way to honour its cash-strapped former stars.
The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) plans to bring together jobless former international stars to man the gates at all stadiums during league matches.
Sulom President Henry Chibowa told BBC Sport that he hoped the new plan would help curb thefts of gate takings at league matches.
Chibowa said plans for the new project are at an advanced stage.
"We feel sorry for some of our former stars who are failing to make ends meet and we want them to have something that can give them bread and butter," he said.
Chibowa said that some former Malawi national team stars were dying in poverty and therefore unable to leave their families anything.
"It¿s sad that some of the stars even fail to meet their medical bills when they are sick," he said.
The Sulom boss disclosed that players who suffered the most were those who had
their footballing careers cut shot as a result of injuries on the pitch.
"At least those have to be recognised and given something to survive," he said.
He said something has to be done in order to encourage upcoming stars that football is a rewarding career.
The current Malawi captain Peter Mponda welcomed Sulom`s efforts.
"We have seen some of our idols die like nobodies because our football administrators did nothing to help them," he said.
About five years ago, a popular international star Harry Waya died without being taken to a proper hospital although he had been sick for a long time.
At the time football fans blamed the Malawi football administrators of lacking the will to help Waya.
Two years ago, former international goalkeeper Henry Kapalamula also died without being recognised. His funeral was not honoured as someone who had contributed to Malawi football.
Kapalamula had been working as a newspaper vendor in Blantyre.
