Cameroon appeal thrown out (12.05.2004)
A Fifa appeals body on Wednesday upheld a decision to dock Cameroon six points for wearing bodysuits in the African Cup of Nations earlier this year.
Fifa docked the points after the Indomitable Lions wore the controversial one-piece kit despite being warned by Fifa president Sepp Blatter that it did not conform with the world body`s statutes.
Blatter was especially outspoken in opposing the uniforms, which combined shorts and jersey into one piece.
Meeting in Zurich under the chairmanship of Rafael Salguero of Guatemala, the Fifa appeal committee rejected an appeal submitted by the Cameroon football federation
(Fecafoot).
The penalty leaves the Central African nation in danger of missing the World Cup finals in Germany.
The Indomitable Lions will start their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign with a six-point deficit and US$154,000 poorer.
Cameroon has tussled with Fifa before over uniforms, receiving warnings from the world body.
During the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, the former African champions ducked the rules by adding black mesh sleeves which were almost invisible from the stands.
Fifa said all teams competing were meant to have the Fifa World Cup logo stitched onto the sleeves of their jerseys.
