Cameroon — Libya: Lions Set To Win (17.06.2005)
The Lions have no other option but to win all their remaining matches if they must grab the lone Group C ticket for the World Cup in Germany.
All is set for next Sunday’s match between the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and their Libyan counterparts. With barely three matches to the end of the on-going 2006 World Cup/African Cup of Nations joint eliminatories (June 19: Cameroon v Libya; September 4: Côte d’Ivoire v Cameroon and October 9: Cameroon v Egypt) each match is as important as a final. The Lions have no other option but to win all their matches if they must grab the lone Group C ticket for the World Cup in Germany. A victory against Libya at the Yaounde Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium on Sunday, could propel the Indomitable Lions (14 points) to the helm of Group C; hoping that Group Leaders, Côte d’Ivoire (16 points), stumble.
The Indomitable Lions are aware of this great challenge. Their high concentration and discipline during the on-going training session in Yaounde is enough evidence. Captain Song and his mates have been training twice a day. Emphasis is on their physical fitness, tactical options and team play style. Caoch Artur Jorge says he can count on his boys for a good match on Sunday. More so because the morale of the players is high. The Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Philippe Mbarga Mboa, as well as officials of the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT, have been doing all to make sure the lions are at ease. Today, there would be a joint press conference by the players, Sports and Physical Education officials and FECAFOOT managers to inform the public on the morale in the group.
The Cameroon Football Federation is also working round the clock to finalize the
technical aspects of the encounter. The First Vice President of FECAFOOT, Jean René Atangana Mballa says all is ready. The Malian officials who would referee the match are already in Yaounde. The Libyan delegation comprising 38 persons (21 players and 17 officials) is expected in Yaounde today. It is only then that Cameroon will be able to know a bit more about the team. The Libyans have been very discrete all along leaving very little information about their squad to filter to the public.
What Cameroonians however know is that unlike Benin which Cameroon virtually walked over a fortnight ago, Libya is no easy ride in Group 3. During the Day 7 matches, Group leaders, Côte d’Ivoire, manage only a goalless draw to Libya in Tripoli. The Elephants dominated the play, but found it difficult to break down Libya`s packed defence. Similarly, in the away match against Libya on June 18 2004 in Tripoli, Libya held Cameroon to a virgin tie. This is an indication that Libya’s force lies in it’s defence; wherefore the present emphasis on the attack line by Artur Jorge. Sunday’s match therefore promises to be a difficult encounter. It is for this reason that the players and sports officials in general are calling on spectators to turn up in their numbers (like they have been doing during the training sessions) to play the role of the "12th player".
About the match proper: some 39,000 tickets, corresponding to the numbered seats in the stadium, have been printed. Prices range from CFA 500 francs for the "popular side", to CFA 20,000 frs for the Presidential lodge. A press release from the Director of the Amadou Ahidjo stadium, states that the tickets will be sold in 13 places in Yaounde (see list on next page) as from today.
