Lions Need Concentration (09.10.2009)
Nkendem FORBINAKE
When the various groups for the ongoing eliminatory series of the Angola 2010 Africa nation’s cup and the South Africa 2010 World Cup were made known earlier this year, bookmakers quickly made their projections.
Group “A”, Cameroon’s group, was considered a walk-over one for the Indomitable Lions as, even, detractors of the national team of Cameroon as well as numerous sporting analysts saw nothing really threatening from Gabon, Morocco and Togo – the other teams of the group.
Strange as football is, the first major obstacle came on the first day of the playoffs in Accra on March 28, 2009 when Cameroon strangely lost 0-1 to Togo. It was a major upset, aggravated by a draw 0-0 later on June 7 in Yaounde against Morocco.
In two matches, Cameroon had to contend itself with a disappointing one draw and a defeat. A disturbing one point out of a possible six, put Cameroon at the bottom of group “A”.
Distraught sports administrators and supporters of the Lions were thrown into a period of anxiety as the chances of qualification became slimmer and slimmer. The team’s coach Otto Pfister threw in the towel fuelling another period of anxiety. It took the arrival of Frenchman Paul Le Guen last July 25 to take over the reins of the national team to raise some hopes. And hopes did not take long in coming.
The fist outing under Le Guen’s leadership brought some hope as Cameroon beat Austria away
2-0on August 12. Then they started coming back into the qualification picture by beating group “A” leaders, Gabon by 2-0 in Libreville on September 5 and 2-1 four days later in Yaounde. These two victories were good enough to put Cameroon back on tract.
As the Indomitable Lions prepare for tomorrow’s match, it is absolutely necessary to concentrate on some of the issues responsible for their dismal performances against Togo and Morocco. Football technicians blame the Lions’ failure in these two games to minor errors, notably the absence of concentration.
In Accra on March 28, many believe Cameroon lost the match on account of a detail. If there had been more concentration, the defence line would have been more alert and defender Bikey could not have left Togolese attacker Adebayor take an upper-hand leading to the goal that led to Cameroon’s defeat. The second-leg match played in Yaounde against Gabon last September 9 is also symptomatic of the necessity of staying concentrated from the first second of the match to the blast of the whistle ending the match. Gabon reduced the score in the ending minutes of the game and many agree that if the game was played beyond regulation time, Gabon could have even scored more goals, given the “passiveness” of the Cameroonians on the pitch. The Cameroonian team has become noted for raising anxiety within its supporters each time they lead a team, because they often leave a feeling that they will be caught up.
