Michel set for Tunisa job (25.10.2001)
TUNIS,
Former French national coach Henri Michel is set to take over as manager of World Cup qualifiers Tunisia, press reports said Thursday.
The much-travelled 54-year-old Michel would take over from Germany`s Eckhard Krautzen.
"The question of who will be national team coach is finally at an end," wrote La Presse. "It will be Frenchman Henri Michel who will be in charge of Tunisia in the African Nations Cup finals and at the World Cup finals."
"The choice of Henri Michel is justified because he is just the kind of experienced coach that is needed," the paper added.
Michel was an outstanding midfielder and captain in the French sides of 1970s winning 58 caps before he retired and turned to
management.
He was coach of the French side that won the Olympic title in Los Angeles in 1984 and was in charge of the national side from 1984-1988, leading a Michel Platini inspired squad to third place in the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico.
He stayed a further four years as head of coaching for France before a brief and unsuccessful spell in club management at Paris St Germain.
Michel then turned his talents to coaching foreign sides including Cameroon at the 1994 World Cup finals, Saudi side Nadi Nasr and Morocco at the 1998 World Cup finals in France where they narrowly failed to qualify from the first round.
Next year`s World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea would be his third consecutive with three different countries.
