Cameroon sack Schaefer (19.11.2004)
Cameroon have sacked their coach Winfried Schaefer after Wednesday`s 3-0 defeat to Germany in a friendly international.
Just minutes after the game in Leipzig, a statement from the Youth and Sports Minister Siegfried David Etame Massoma was read out on national radio announcing the dismissal of the German coach.
"We regret to inform you (Schaefer) that today we are unilaterally terminating your contract on grounds of grievous misconduct and poor results," Massoma`s statement said.
Schaefer`s sacking came from the Minister because the national coach in the Central African country is employed by the ministry, not the football federation (Fecafoot).
Prince Ndoki Mukete, deputy secretary general of the Cameroon football federation (Fecafoot) welcomed the decision to get rid of Schaefer.
"It was the best thing that could have happened to Cameroon football," he told BBC Sport in Yaounde.
However, a bewildered Schaefer said no-one has told him of his dismissal.
"I
don`t know anything about that," Schaefer said.
"No-one has contacted me so I assume that I am still Cameroon`s manager," he added.
That view is not shared by the Cameroon hierarchy who have reportedly placed former Fulham coach Jean Tigana and former Real Sociedad boss Reynald Denoueix at the top of the wanted list.
Schaefer, who had been in charge since 2001, was critical of his players after the loss to Germany, telling reporters that pre-match talks over bonus payments had affected his side.
"When you spend an hour before the game talking about your bonuses, it`s not helpful for the success of the team," Schaefer said.
"You`re working against your own chances of success."
Schaefer has been under increasing pressure in recent months with fans and media calling for his resignation.
There were also rumours of a rift between the German and some of his players, with Modeste Mbami quitting the national team saying he could not play under the coach.
