Striker dies after collapsing (30.08.2007)
A ZAMBIAN footballer playing in the Israeli league collapsed and died after a training match overnight, in an eerie echo of the tragedy that befell Spain midfield player Antonio Puerta.
Chaswe Nsofwa, 27, who played for Hapoel Beersheva, collapsed during a training game in the south of the country, a hospital source said.
Nsofwa was taken to hospital in Beersheva, where he was declared dead.
The cause of his death was not revealed.
Puerta, 22, collapsed while playing for Seviila in a Primera Liga match on Saturday, but died on Tuesday after multiple organ failure caused by prolonged cardiac arrest.
Club officials and teammates tried to restart Nsofwa`s heart for several minutes on the field, before taking him to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"When we arrived, we found the soccer player lying on the grass. We found his friends trying to help him," a paramedic

said.
"We gave him first aid, electric shocks and an external pacemaker, but despite all our efforts, he was declared dead at the hospital."
The reason for Nsofwa`s collapse is unclear, but temperatures on the field had approached 40C with low humidity.
Nsofwa, who joined Hapoel Beersheba in the off-season, scored a goal in his team`s 3-0 win over Hakoach Amidar Ramat Gan on Saturday.
Other players who have died after collapsing on the field include Benfica and Hungary striker Miklos Feher, who died from a heart attack during a Portugal league match in January 2004.
Portugal player Hugo Cunha, of first-division Leiria, died following a cardiac arrest in 2005.
Cameroon international Marc-Vivien Foe collapsed and died while playing in the 2003 Confederations Cup tournament in France, and Colombia teen Victor Alfonso Guerrero collapsed and died during training in April 2006.
