Praises and debts of organisers of junior African athletics championship (11.08.2003)
By Martin Etonge, back from Garoua
Although the organisers of the sixth edition of the junior African athletics championship that ended in Garoua on Sunday can boost of haven had a great event, they are still worried about settling the huge debts incurred.
The Cameroon athletics federation, backed by the African confederation (AAC), have received a pass mark from the participating countries, but by press time were still waiting for a government promised subsidy of 110 million CFA Francs.
Consequently, they could not leave Garoua as hotel owners and other service providers were expecting payment.
Augustin Edjoa, president of the Cameroon federation told a press conference at the end of the event that government contribution was evaluated at 130.000 million CFA Francs, approved by the Prime minister’s office, but the ministry of finance brought it down to 110.000 million CFA Francs. “It’s that money we are hoping to get to clear the debts”, he confirmed.
Edjoa added that the cost of the event was increased by the shift of venue from Yaounde to Garoua. They had to pay for the domestic flight of all athletes and officials.
Edjoa and AAC president Kalkaba Malboum then praised CAMAIR for helping them achieve the feat of taking the participants to Garoua in record time.
In turn the officials and 272 athletes from 37 countries were unanimous in congratulating the organisers for a job well done. One Moroccan officials remarked that it was the first time a local organising committee was footing the lodging and feeding bills of participants.
Abdoul Wahab Ba, Senegalese born secretary general of the AAC told press men about the goodies the Cameroon organisers did. He disclosed that exceptionally, visas for all foreign participants were paid by the federation.
For Ba the huge crowd turn out in
the Garoua Rounde Adjia stadium was a big manifestation of the support of Kalkaba as president of the AAC. For Ba, the record 37 countries happened because people came to see what Kalkaba can do as president of the AAC. Kalkaba was elected president last April and the championships were the first international event he was chairing.
But for kalkaba, it was a sign that African athletics is growing and countries are beginning to take succession problem seriously. They have to start preparing the youths to take over from the old guard.
On the competition proper, Kalkaba said he was impressed by the discovering of new talents. He cited Uganda’s Kiprop Boniface who defeated athletes from confirmed long distance running countries like Kenya and Ethiopia in the 10000m.
On the track, there were several other interesting achievements, though only two records were shattered. Cameroon confirmed their vocation in the short distances with Ngom Priso and Delphine Atangana taking gold in the 100m men and women categories respectively. Delphine Atangana also took gold in the 200m, just like the men’s 4 by 100 relay team.
Egypt dominated in the throwing events, though Pierre Louis Elvino from Mauritius offered them a good challenge. The crowd was very elated with an impressive finish of the ladies’ 3000m by 18 years old Mariem Selsouli from Morocco.
Nineteen countries won at least a medal. Nigeria with ten athletes had 13 medals, 4 gold, 8 silver and one bronze. Gambia had a hundred percent success as their three athletes took three medals.
In terms of number of medals, Cameroon with 16 medals finished third ahead of Kenya with 14. But in terms of quality Kenya pushed Cameroon to fourth position. However, it was the first Cameroonian participation in the junior championships. Egypt and Morocco took first and second respectively.
