Njanka might miss nations and world cup (17.10.2001)
Pierre Njanka could miss Cameroon`s World Cup trip to Japan and Korea after a knee operation which could rule him out for six months.
Njanka recently had a trial with Portsmouth in England and his agent was busy negotiating with the English Nationwide Division One club when the player twisted his knee while training with his French club Strasbourg.
The Alsacian club`s medical staff have confirmed that Njanka has torn a ligament and will be sidelined for the best part of six months.
This means the 26-year-old defender, who was a key member of The Indomitable Lions`
African Nations Cup-winning team in Nigeria in January 2000, will not be available for the defence of the title next January in Mali.
Although he could recover in time for the World Cup - he was the scorer of one of the best goals of France `98 - the possibility of making the squad is remote as he will probably not be fully fit to play on the biggest stage in the world.
Meanwhile, another young Cameroon international, Joseph Ndo, who joined Strasbourg a couple of years ago at the behest of the club`s then coach Claude Leroy has moved to the United Arab Emirates and signed for Al Kaleej.
