Espanyol sign Kameni (29.07.2004)
Cameroon goalkeeper Carlos Idriss Kameni has signed for Spanish first division club Espanyol in a three-year deal.
Espanyol paid French club Le Havre the transfer fee sum of US$600,000 .
Kameni follows the footsteps of fellow Cameroonian and former African Footballer of the Year Thomas N`Kono, who also played for the club.
N`Kono played for Espanyol from 1982-1990 and is now on the club`s coaching staff.
"It is an honour to be playing for the same club as him," said Kameni.
"He was one of my heroes when I was a boy and it is because of him that Espanyol have been interested in me and followed my progress for almost two years.
"I was fond of Le Havre, after all they discovered
me, but I didn`t have many chances there and now is the time to move on."
English Premiership side Bolton Wanderers gave Kameni a trial earlier this month but it was Espanyol that got Kameni`s signature on a three-year contract.
Kameni was a member of the Cameroon team that won the gold medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and was at the Cup of Nations finals in Tunisia.
Nkono, who was beside Kameni as he signed his contract, is confident that the 20-year-old will have a bright future in Spanish football.
"In the Spanish first division, he`ll face some of the best players in the world and he can only improve."
However Kameni will have to compete with Belgian Erik Lemmens for a starting spot.
