The Players and The Game (26.01.2006)
During yesterday`s match, some players distinguished themselves either through their excellent performances or poor showing.
Samuel Eto`o: He was elected man of the Cameroon — Togo match. This couldn`t have been otherwise. The ace striker was in top form yesterday. Although he missed a handful of scoring opportunities in the first half, Eto`o remain true to himself as he smashed the ball into the top corner of the net at the 67th minute to open scores for Cameroon. His missile strike took goalkeeper Agassa Kosi by surprise. The star player, who now totals four goals in the tournament, was also the architect of Cameroon`s second goal.
Albert Meyong Ze: Although he came in to replace Webo at the 68th minute, the striker left his mark. He scored Cameroon`s second goal, a smart kick with the inside of his right foot, after a pass from Eto`o. The goal sealed Cameroon`s victory and booked a place for the Lions in quarter-finals..
Rigobert Song: The Turkey-based defender was the pillar of Cameroon`s defence. Keeping Adebayor far from Souleymanou`s goal area was his main task. He accomplished the mission with much dexterity. The zeal to see his team succeed at times pushed him to abandon the defence for the front line. Luckily enough, there were players like Makoun who could cover the gap he left behind.
Raymond Kalla: He started off well, forming a good pair with Song at Cameroon`s defence line. But his match came to an end a few minutes into the second half when he was carried out of the field of play following a muscle tear. He was replaced by Andre Stephane Bikey. The injury might keep the old Lion off the pitch for the rest of the tournament.
Souleymanou Hamidou: Cameroon`s keeper was agile throughout the encounter. He stopped several shots from Adebayor and his mates. The most spectacular being at the 7th minute of the second half when Adebayor dribbled pass the defence and was heading for the goal. Souleymanou got the excellent reflex to get the ball as Adebayor tried to skip pass him.
Achille Webo: He lost a golden opportunity to open scores from Cameroon when he found himself some 10 metres from the goal but sent his shot high and wide. He also failed to materialize several scoring opportunities. Coach Artur Jorge took a wise decision to replace him with Meyong Ze, who drove home Cameroon`s second goal.
Jean Makoun II: He was very present in the midfield, making several crucial moves. He even made up for the lapses of the defence. This was the case when he stopped Adebayor who was heading for the goal at the 30th minute. Unfortunately the valiant action earned him a yellow card.
Douala Mbella: He almost scored on the stroke of half-time. But his shot was warded off by Agassa. In all, he had a good match as he gave his all.
Geremi Njitap: He was the backbone of the Cameroon`s midfield. His stamina and organizational ability made the Cameroonian side to be in control of the game most of the time.
Atouba Thimothee: Remained faithful to his post. He had a good match as he played an important role in the defence.
Ngom Kome: Excellent game. His dribble and passes helped to create scoring opportunities for the Lion.
Saidou Alioum: No spectacular action. But he had a good match as he remained true to his role. He also made good passes that helped his team mates to make a difference.
