CAN/World Cup Eliminatories : Midway Verdict (13.10.2004)
The first phase of the joint 2006 World Cup and Nations Cup qualifiers ended over the weekend.
The qualifying campaign for the 2006 World Cup and African Nations Cup reached a crucial half-way stage over the weekend. Some 15 encounters took place across the continent with major changes recorded at the head of some groups. Senegal, South Africa and Angola all shot up to the top of Group One, Two and Four respectively.
Senegalese Lions took over from the Hawks of Togo in Group I thanks to two goals from Henri Camara and another by Pape Bouba Diop over Liberia in Monrovia. South Africa, on the other hand, beat the Cranes of Uganda 1-0 to record nine points and topple Ghana Black Stars, under new coach Sam Arday, at the top of Group 2.
In Group Three, Cote d’Ivoire simply maintained the leadership position which it grabbed after the
fourth playing day during which the Elephants piped Benin 1-0. Cameroon further dampened their chances of qualifying for its fifth successive World Cup as it settled for a 1-1 draw with Sudan to occupy an uncomfortable third position.
In Group Four, Angola displaced Nigeria at the top after defeating Zimbabwe thanks to a second half goal. Angola presently has 11 points from five matches, a point ahead of erstwhile leaders Nigeria. Leaders, Syli Stars of Guinea, barely held on to their position in Group 5, when they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Morocco.
The last and most crucial phase of the competition, that begins in March next year, will be very determinant as most of the teams still stand a fair chance of picking up their group’s lone ticket for the World Cup. With five matches remaining, nothing is certain yet at the head of each Group.
