Jorge to stay on with Cameroon (12.10.2005)
Portuguese coach Artur Jorge will remain in charge of Cameroon despite the national side`s surprise failure to qualify for next year`s World Cup finals in Germany.
Officials said Jorge is expected to honour his contract which expires next June, and this includes taking charge during January`s African Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Jorge was appointed coach of the Indomitable Lions in January and he promptly won his first five matches.
Yet Cameroon missed out on an African record sixth World Cup finals appearance on Saturday after defender Pierre Wome missed an injury-time penalty in the 1-1 draw with Egypt.
The result ceded top spot in Group Three to Ivory Coast, who beat Sudan 3-1 to qualify for their maiden World Cup.
Cameroon`s reigning African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto`o has revealed that he did not take the spot-kick because team-mate Pierre Wome asked to instead.
Defender Wome, who
scored the penalty that won Cameroon gold in the 2000 Olympics, struck his kick against the post in the fifth minute of injury time.
"Why didn`t I take the penalty? I went to take it but Wome came up to me and said he was really confident of scoring," Eto`o told Spanish sports daily Sport on Monday.
"You have to accept that these things happen in football sometimes."
Cameroon needed only to beat Egypt`s Pharaohs to qualify for Germany 2006.
"It is very hard to have had everything in your own hands and throw it all away in the final seconds," Eto`o said.
"I am sad for my country, my colleagues and for myself.
"There is only one remedy for it all and that is to do well in the African Nations Cup, to give everyone who is suffering with us now a great lift."
The Nations Cup finals take place in Egypt between 20 January and 10 February and Cameroon have won the competition a joint-record four times.
