Schaefer under pressure (18.02.2004)
Cameroon coach Winfried Schaefer is facing calls for him to resign - but at the same time others want him to move permanently to the country.
Newspapers in Yaounde have criticised his tactics and team selection during the Cup of Nations in Tunisia - which ended with Cameroon losing to Nigeria in the quarter-finals.
They had won the previous two editions of the event.
One newspaper described what it called a "hazardous tactical choice," with another giving a detailed critique of Schaefer`s team selection during the 5-3 group victory over Zimbabwe.
Schaefer is contracted to lead the Indomitable Lions until 2006.
But he has again faced calls to base himself in
the country, this time from the government.
"Schaefer should stay in Cameroon in order to scout for new talent," said Ndjana Roberts, the Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
"We are doing everything to get him a house, a car and other working facilities which will permit him to go to any part of the country," Ndjana said.
When he signed his new contract last year, Schaefer insisted he had the right to remain in Europe - where most of his international players are based.
But he said he is prepared to focus on the domestic elite league, which begins later this month, in his search for new players to help Cameroon qualify for the World Cup and Cup of Nations in 2006.
