Indomitable Lions lose five places on FIFA’s table (07.10.2004)
Martin Etonge
For the first time in over a year, Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions have lost their first place in Africa on the FIFA monthly rankings.
For the month of October 2004, Cameroon have dropped from the 16th position to 21, while the Super Eagles of Nigeria have become Africa’s number one, at 18, up two places.
Thanks to a shaky 2006 World Cup and Nations Cup qualifying campaign, crowned by last month’s 2-3 defeat to Egypt in a World Cup qualifier, it was logical for Cameroon to make a downward movement on the prestigious world classification chart.
Cameroon now count 690 points, 11 below Nigeria. Only a resounding win over Sudan in the next World Cup qualify on Saturday will enable Cameroon boost their standings on the table.
Meantime, only nine African countries are in the Top 50. Egypt come

third behind Cameroon and stand 30, up five places.
Senegal are 31, Morocco 34, Tunisia 36 and South Africa 40. Mali are 44, one place ahead of Ivory Coast who spectacularly won 13 places.
Morocco, South Africa and Mali each lost a place in the October monthly rankings.
Ninety World Cup qualifies and fifteen friendlies influenced this ranking. Brazil is still number one with 845 points, followed by France with 799 points.
Still within the Top Ten, Argentina dislodged Spain from the third position as both nations swapped positions. Same movement happened to Netherlands and the Czech Republic to the benefit of the Netherlands who stand sixth.
England stayed 7, while Portugal gained three positions to come into the Top Ten and stand 8. Italy, (up one place) and Mexico (down two places) complete the Top Ten chart.
