Cameroon sack Olympic coach (19.04.2004)
Cameroon have fired Jean Paul Akono from the national under-23 squad.
Though no official reasons have been given for the sacking of Akono, Cameroon`s failure to qualify for the Olympic games this year seems to be the key to his dismissal.
Akono was in charge when Cameroon won Olympic gold in Sydney in 2000 and was expected to lead them to Athens this year.
Following the victory in Sydney Akono was appointed as coach of the national side but lost his job when the Indomitable Lions lost a 2002 World Cup qualifier to Angola.
He then coached Chad for a year, before returning to take charge
of Cameroon`s under-23 side in September 2003.
After leading their qualifying group for much of the campaign Cameroon lost their final qualifier 1-0 in Mali last month and failed to reach Athens.
It has taken his employer, the Minister of Youth and Sport, almost three weeks to make their decision to get rid of the coach.
Akono has been replaced by Roger Eteme, a former coach with both Canon Yaounde and Bamboutos Mbouda in Cameroon`s first division.
Eteme`s appointment comes after he has turned Bamboutos into championship contenders in the domestic league, they finished third last season.
