Late Geremi goal gives Jorge winning start with Cameroon (10.02.2005)
PARIS - Chelsea midfielder Geremi scored a late goal to give Cameroon a 1-0 win over Senegal in a friendly played on the outskirts of Paris on Wednesday, getting new coach Artur Jorge`s reign off to a successful start.
Geremi fired home a powerful shot from just outside the box three minutes from the end of a game that Senegal had dominated.
Portuguese Jorge, who took over from sacked German Winfried Shaefer last month, has been given the task of ensuring the former African champions qualify for the 2006 World Cup. They currently lie third in their qualifying group.
Senegal, World Cup quarter-finalists in 2002, had the clearer chances but failed to convert in a dull rematch
of the 2002 African Nations Cup final won by Cameroon in a penalty shootout.
Senegal striker El Hadji Diouf, perfectly set up by midfielder Papa Bouba Diop, sent a 20-metre shot over the bar in the 10th minute.
Eight minutes into the second half, Henri Camara forced Cameroon`s Idriss Carlos Khamani into a spectacular save when he fired a powerful shot from just inside of the box.
Senegal coach Guy Stephan then tried to bring some steel in his midfield when he replaced Babakar Gueye with Khalilou Fadiga, whose header in the 66th minute hit the crossbar.
Ten minutes from time, substitute Achille Webo stumbled over Tony Sylva in Cameroon`s only clear chance of the game.
