Fecafoot Bans Match Postponement (15.04.2005)
The Post (Buea)
Nformi Sonde Kinsai
The Secretary General of the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT, Jean Réné Atangana Mballa, has said the Federation will no longer entertain requests from First Division clubs calling for postponement of matches due to transportation difficulties between the northern and southern parts of the country.
Atangana stressed the point at a press conference in Yaounde, April 12, organised to reaffirm the decision, which was taken on April 5.
He noted that since the beginning of this year`s Division One championship, teams programmed to play in the northern part of the country and vice versa, have taken advantage of the irregularity or absence of flights to systematically request for postponement of matches.
He said such an attitude is a prejudice to the match calendar adapted by FECAFOOT and equally plays negatively to the regularity of the competition.
"Other modes of transport such as rail and road can equally be used. Teams that have resorted to using only air transport are now doing so at their own risk, for no request to postpone matches based on reason of transportation difficulties would henceforth be accepted," the April letter addressed to all club Presidents reads.
The Secretary General, however, noted that for weeks during which matches are programmed on Wednesdays, a postponement of 24 hours could be tolerated in order to enable the teams reach the match venue.
On what the Federation is doing to resolve the problem, Atangana said FECAFOOT has no mastery of the mode of transportation between the northern and southern parts of the country.
He said the championship has been programmed to run up to November 30 and that such a schedule must scrupulously be respected, taking into consideration international engagements,
too.
Atangana told a story of how a club ignored the advice of the Federation to embark on other modes of transport to be able to catch up with time. He said the same club later filed an application calling for the postponement of the match.
He also talked of subvention of FCFA 3.5 million given to each club by FECAFOOT at the beginning of the season in order to ease their movement and reduce their operation costs.
Noting that such a move has never been heard of in the history of the country`s football, he paid tribute to MTN for their enormous support.
On why some clubs refuse to put on jerseys carrying the MTN logo, the scribe said such an act is in violation of the terms of a convention signed with the institution to support D1 teams.
He said in addition to financial support from the company, the clubs were equally furnished with equipment and warned that clubs caught in this act of disloyalty would face serious consequences, including the forfeiting of money from gate takings.
He noted that match officials would be instructed to take special note and report to the Federation.Responding to a number of questions, Atangana revealed that at the end of this year`s D1 championship, the last four clubs out of the 18, would automatically be relegated, while those occupying the 13th and 14th positions would join the 10 provincial champions to play the round robin tournament.
He equally noted that 16 teams would play at the 2006 D1 championship.
Other issues addressed at the press conference included poor match attendance, corrupt referees, biased appointment of match commissioners, FECAFOOT and CRTV working relationship, sharing of gate takings between the Federation and the supervisory ministry, etc.
The FECAFOOT scribe used the occasion to announce the Federation`s general assembly for April 23 this year.
