Enyimba draw first blood (01.12.2003)
Enyimba`s goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama didn`t have to make a save
Enyimba took the first step towards becoming the first ever Nigerian team to win the Champions League with a 2-0 win at home to Ismaili of Egypt.
Enyimba took the lead in the 28th minutes through Emeka Nwanna, who headed home after a great shot from Ndidi Anumnu rebounded off the Ismaili crossbar.
The Nigerians doubled their lead four minutes into the second half when striker Anumnu tapped in the ball from close range, after a cross from the left by Michael Orchei.
Enyimba had several other great chances to extend their lead but were let down by some poor finishing, and when they did find the target Mohamed Eliwa in the Ismaili goal made several outstanding saves.
Vincent Enyema in the Enyimba goal on the other hand didn`t have a serious save to make in the match.
Ismaili`s German coach Theo Bucker said after the game that they were missing five regular players, but he was confident that his
side could come back in the second-leg.
"We played a largely inexperienced side today, as we were without five of our top players.
"We therefore just played as best we could and we were lucky to lose by only two goals.
"We will beat this Enyimba side in Egypt and win the cup," he added defiantly.
Enyimba defender Yusuf Mohamed however was also confident that his side could bring the cup to Nigeria for the very first time.
"It was always going to be difficult against an organised team like Ismaili.
"But we will do everything we can to defend our goals in Egypt and bring the cup to Nigeria for the very first time," he said.
Ismaili are bidding to win the cup for Egypt for the third consecutive year.
Meanwhile outside the ground police had to fight off hundreds of angry fans who couldn`t afford to get into the match after ticket prices were hiked.
The second leg of the final is in Ismailia, Egypt on 12 December.
