Lions to Hunt for Victory in Abidjan (02.09.2005)
Cameroon badly needs the three points at stake in Abidjan to lead Group C.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will next Sunday face the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire. The epic encounter, considered by many as the "final of Group C", is one of the Day 9 matches in the ongoing eliminatory series for the 2006 World Cup/African Cup of Nations. It will take place at the Felix Houphouet Boigny stadium, Abidjan. Judging from the stakes, it will be a difficult encounter. For the first time, Ivorians have come very close to participating in the final phase of the World Cup. Their enthusiasm could be likened to the one Cameroonians had in November 1981 during the last qualifying game against Morocco in Yaounde when Cameroonians hoped to go to the World Cup for the first time in 1982, in Spain. Côte d’Ivoire, who presently lead Group three with 19 points would do everything to maintain the lead to grab the lone World Cup ticket of the group.
The Indomitable Lions are aware of the challenge. The team badly needs the three precious points at stake in Abidjan to take over the leader position in the group, wherefore the seriousness demonstrated throughout the week-long training camp in Saint Quentin, France. Discipline was the watch word with the players respecting the instructions of the head coach to the letter. Generally, the trainings began with physical exercises under the supervision of assistant coach, Raul Aguas. Head coach, Artur Jorge then came in to work on the different tactical options, while Songo’o Jacques drilled the goalkeepers. An attentive medical team was always set to attend to the players. Last minute report from Saint Quentin hold that the morale of the Lions is very high. If we have to go by
declarations made during the press conference of last Wednesday, then Cameroonians have every reason to sit back and watch next Sunday’s encounter with ease. The entire squad is optimistic about the outcome of the Abidjan expedition.
The Indomitable Lions will not be alone at the Felix Houphouet Boigny stadium on September 4, 2005. Besides members of the official delegation, several supporters from Cameroon and abroad are on their way to Abidjan for the epic encounter. Today, the special Camair flight, transporting the national team from Paris to Abidjan, will make a one-hour stop over at the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport. It will be an occasion for the players to receive the last blessings of their fans, as well as board the numerous supporters for the match. Officials of the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education say an ecumenical church service will be held at the airport to ask for divine blessings for the Lions.
To the Ivorians, Sunday’s match would be a history-making event. "The Elephants are 90 minutes from their first World Cup appearance. This will be the last but one stage to our qualification and we are therefore calling for the support, commitment and loyalty of everybody without distinction of religion or political leaning", Ivorian football officials say. The Ivorian Football Federation has also prepared special T-shirts, to mobilise the public behind the team.
Next Sunday’s encounter, will be a closed-gate match. Reports from Abidjan say all the tickets have already been sold. Special security measures would be taken to ensure the safety of spectators. To prevent over-crowding and scrambling around the stadium, only holders of tickets or accreditation will be allowed access.
