CAN 2008: What Squad for Cameroon in Ghana (11.09.2007)
Plagued with injuries and the absence of a permanent coach, it is yet uncertain which players will make the trip to Ghana.
Barely four months to the final round of the African Cup of Nations in Ghana, it’s yet uncertain who will coach the Lions or which players will defend the national colours in the greatest African football jamboree. With the dream team aging away and multiplying injuries, the interim national team coach, Jules Nyongha, who had intended to use the matches against Japan and Equatorial Guinea as preparation for the tournament, was forced to call in some youngsters at the last minute ahead of the match with Equatorial Guinea and the results was what we all know. A humiliating 1-0 defeat from what can be considered as the underdogs of African football.
The defeat against Japan and Equatorial Guinea only reveal the danger of last minute improvisation. Football has become both an art and a science and success only comes in through hard work and adequate preparation. The announcement of the appointment of a new coach does not put the interim coach, Jules Nyongha, in a position to act with confidence or take any long lasting decisions, as his decisions or choices will eventually be changed by the new coach.
Four
months is too short a time for a coach to inject new blood into a team that has ambitions to win a major tournament like the African Cup of Nations. This leaves the coach to work with the same players all the time with the disastrous consequences. Players no longer able to deliver as before, injuries and the risk of having some players boycott the national selection. As the saying goes, you do not work a willing horse to dying point. Some key players of what is popularly referred to as the ‘Dream team’ like Eto’o and Webo, are currently out of action and will resume play just one month to the event and may not be at the their best by the start of the competition. Outside players like Rigobert Song, Geremi Njitap, Samuel Eto’o Fils who form the hardcore of the Lions and are sure to be part of any selection, are players like Atouba, Perrier Doumbe, Alioum Saidou, Meyong Ze, Achille Emana, Salomon Olembe and others who have been making in-and-out movements in the national selection and are consequently unsure about their selection each time. This is not in a way to build any cohesive team where players automatically understand themselves on the field of play. There are individual talents but unable to lease with one another to produce a collective play style.
