"Barça doesn`t need saviours" (07.02.2007)
Eto`o returned to action after four months out injured. The Cameroon international is looking forward to doing his bit to improve the team, however he doesn`t think Barça needs any saviours.
It was one of the moments that Barça fans had dreamed about and it finally took place at the Reyno de Navarra stadium. Samuel Eto`o took to the field again and put his serious knee injury behind him. The Cameroon striker is looking forward to getting more action but insists that neither he nor Messi, who is also back training, need to save Barça. He point out that without the two of them Barça have gone top in the league. This is one of a number of subjects that Etoo talked about in an interview with Barça TV and FCBarcelona.cat.
How did you feel on your return?
"Happy, it was like my first game in the top division. I was lucky to make my comeback in such a nice place and with my team mates around me I felt relaxed."
9 minutes isn`t much but perhaps sufficient time to test the injury.
"The important thing was to play, enjoy a game of football and feel good, even if it was only a minute it would still be important."
What did Rikjaard say to you?
"He didn`t say anything, he asked me if I understood everything."
Scoring would have been too much to ask?
"No, because once I was on the pitch I forgot about the injury and I was the same as everyone else. I tried, but I`ll score next time."
When it was 0-0 did you think about coming on and scoring?
"The important thing was just to play, on the field you play to win and to do that you need to score goals. It didn`t happen today but I`m happy with the attitude of my teammates because we saw the Barça attitude of the last few years. It wasn`t important we didn`t score, because if we continue playing like that the goals will come."
This was a step in your recovery. How long before we see the Eto`o that we know?
"Now I need to get match fit, bit by bit I will get to game time and I need to train hard and above all rest and eat well. Soon I will begin to enjoy myself."
Your recovery time has been reduced, who do think about on your comeback?
"I

didn`t take any short cuts, it was my knee that allowed me to work again. We were lucky to have good weather and we were able to work outside. But if I have to think of someone I would think about my solicitor Josep Maria Messalles, my physiotherapist Emili Ricart, Alejandro Echevarría, `Gordi` and all those who love me and have supported me over a long time. I also must think about some people who are not from my team Albelda and Aitor Ocio, their letters and calls gave me a lot of motivation."
The comeback was at the Reyno de Navarra Stadium. What do you expect if you play against Racing at home?
"I want to play some minutes, that goes without saying unless my knee stops me form doing that."
How do you imagine the reaction of the Camp Nou crowd?
"I don`t want to think about that, all I want to do is help the team."
Messi is also returning. Does it annoy you that the call you the saviours?
"It doesn`t annoy me but I don`t believe that we are saviours. Barça haven`t done so bad without us. I`m happy that with our recovery we will have a bigger squad and the coach will have more to choose form. Also there will be more competition for places and that drives players to a higher level."
Even without you guys the team is still in contention for all competitions.
"In general everything has gone perfect, because in any team there are things to improve on, but that is done in the dressing room and we will do that same as we normally do."
Has the criticism of the team surprised you?
"No. We probably deserved a lot of the criticism because people have got used to seeing more that what we have shown lately. The people want to see us play as we normally do and since lately we haven`t played so well we get criticism but that`s football and to progress you just got to accept that. I`m happy my team mates have dealt with it quite well."
Rijkaard will probably have a full strength squad for the final decisive phase of the season. We should be optimistic?
"We should always be optimistic. We must have the hope of winning trophies again. We have a great squad and hopefully we will also get a bit of the luck of champions."
