Mandela pleads for SA (15.05.2004)
South Africa`s final presentation in their bid to host the 2010 World Cup promised an event that would unite the races.
Former president Nelson Mandela told the 24-man executive committee that South Africa was "ready, able, willing and capable" to host the event.
He also made an emotional plea saying that awarding the World Cup to South Africa would be the natural conclusion to the process of racial integration in his once troubled homeland.
"When we were on Robben Island the only access to the World Cup was radio," said the Nobel Peace Prize winner.
"Football offered the only joyful release for the prisoners.
"As football gave us hope on Robben Island, hosting this World Cup would give further meaning to this hope.
"I can confirm that we are ready, able,
willing and capable as well as passionate about hosting the World Cup."
The bid chief Danny Jordaan backed up Mandela`s plea.
"We were ready to host the 2006 World Cup and we are ready to host the 2010 World Cup," he said.
"Our track record on security is good, we have organised 11 major events in the past decade, all of them safe and secure.
"We have eight stadiums, three of which meet requirements and five require only minor upgrades."
South Africa were favourites to host the 2006 World Cup before Germany won a vote mired in football`s murky politics.
In the wake of the 2006 controversy, Blatter introduced a system under which the hosting of the tournament would be rotated around continents - and he promised the 2010 World Cup to Africa.
