Cameroon stadium for renovation (30.07.2006)
By Martin Etonge
Cameroon will have to find a new ground for their last two 2008 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
This after the Minister of Sports announced that Yaounde`s Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium will be closed for the whole of 2007 for renovation.
However it is yet to be decided where the final games, against Liberia and Rwanda, will be played.
Cameroon have just two other main stadiums and considering the poor state of repair of the Douala Reunification Stadium it looks like only option for the Indomitable Lions will be the ground in Garoua.
Garoua is 900km to the north of Yaounde and the stadium has a capacity of 20,000 as opposed to the 50,000 that can fit into
the Ahmadou Ahidjo.
To make matters worse temperatures in Garoua often reach 40°C.
The renovation of the stadium in Yaounde will cost around $US2.5 million and will be carried out by a yet to be named Japanese company, as the project is entirely financed by the Japanese International Co-operation Mission.
The work will include reinforcement of the stadium foundations, the construction of a press tribune, toilets and replacement of the pitch.
It will be the third time in just five years that the stadium will be shut down for refurbishment.
All of Yaounde`s division one clubs will also be affected by the closure and make use of the dusty ground called the Military Stadium.
