Eto’o, The Great Come Backs (27.02.2007)
With a goal provoked, a decisive pass and a goal scored, the striker propelled his team to a 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao.
Five months after sustaining a knee injury, the Cameroonian prolific scorer, Samuel Eto’o last Sunday made his veritable return to the football pitch with a brilliant performance. The triple African player of the year and 2006 highest goal scorer in the Spanish league, in his first outing, reassured the public he was still in top form. The Cameroonian was easily the man of the match provoking a goal, giving a decisive pass for the second goal and to put the icing on the cake, Samuel Eto’o got and own goal at the 40th minute.
The Cameroonian was expected to come in as a substitute as he did during the match with Osasuna but the FC Barcelona coach, Frank Rijkaard surprised everyone by listing Eto’o in the first eleven. "Eto’o told me after the last training session that he wanted to participate. This means he felt

wellto help the team and that’s what explains his presence in the list," said the Dutch coach prior to the match. A prophesy that turned out to be true as Eto’o’s presence was very influential in the match. After so many months to see Eto’o score, the Camp Nou celebrated with joy when broke an offside trap, latched onto a Ronaldinho pass and coolly took his time to slot a left footed shot past the Bilbao goalkeeper. The marksman was replaced at the 65th minute by Messi, to the standing ovation of the Camp Nou.
Eto’o comeback and fighting spirit, spurred FC Barcelona to regain their spectacular play style which has been missing since his injury. Eto’o’s return can be said to be timely as his team is facing stiff competition in the race for the league title and a crucial return leg match against Liverpool in the European Champions’ League. With the 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao, Barca takes a two point lead at the top of the league table with 47 points.
