Cameroon on the verge of semis (27.03.2008)
Durban - Cameroon beat Cote d`Ivoire 8-6 in a bruising battle on Wednesday to virtually book their place in Saturday`s semi-finals of the Fifa Beach Soccer World Cup 2008 Qualifier on Durban`s New Beach.
Cameroon were never behind, but only secured the victory in the dying seconds with their final goal after Cote d`Ivoire`s never-say-die attitude brought them to within a goal of drawing level, despite trailing 2-6 midway through the second period.
Cameroon opened their account with a flukey strike that saw Franck Batoum score the first of his four goals after the ball ricocheted off the goalkeeper Kofi Enam from a corner and bounced off Batoum`s chest into the goal.
After that lucky start to the scoring it was Cote d`Ivoire who enjoyed the luck with a series of
50-50 decisions going their way, but the tough and physical approach from Cameroon won the day as they out muscled their smaller and arguably more skilful opponents.
Cameroon were also more prepared to throw players forward and their decision to employ two front runners for most of the match paid dividends with Batoum making the most of his opportunities as he tormented the Cote d`Ivoire defenders.
On Thursday Cote d`Ivoire meet Cape Verde in the first match of the day at 11:00 which they have to win to have a chance of reaching the semis, while Cameroon take on Nigeria.
