Nigerian job is not available - NFA chief (25.10.2001)
LAGOS,
The secretary-general of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Patrick Okpomo Wednesday said that there were no plans to contract Italian coach Gianni Carnevale for the national team.
"This is a case of fraud. The man (Carnevale) called me, but I told him the job is not vacant. He has implicated some Nigerians, who had promised to deliver the job to him," Okpomo said.
"These people have been using my name in connection with this shady deal. I am going to expose them because we now have documents linking them with the unwholesome deal."
Carnevale reportedly quit his job at a lower league club in Italy after he was offered a contract by Nigeria.
The NFA has also contacted
worldsoccer governing body FIFA on the matter and plan to place press adverts to warn people that the country`s top soccer job is not vacant.
Spokesman for the soccer body Austin Mgbolu told AFP that the police has been informed of "the activities of fraudsters to dupe unsuspecting foreign coaches."
Okpomo only recently told AFP that applications from several European coaches to lead the national team, the `Super Eagles`, were rejected because Shaibu Amodu has been given a chance to prove himself in the job.
Amodu took over the Eagles in May following the dismissal of Dutchman Jo Bonfrere and went on to make history as the first Nigerian-born coach to qualify the team to the World Cup finals.
