Ethiopia are participating in their 11th AFCON tournament.
Ethiopia return to the AFCON for the first time since 2013 when they exited at the group stages, they failed to qualify for the last three tournaments.
Ethiopia were one of three teams to participate in the inaugural AFCON tournament in 1957 along with Egypt and Sudan.
Ethiopia’s first game at the AFCON against South Africa in 1957 was cancelled as South Africa were expelled from the tournament. Their first game was in the 1957 final against Egypt a game they lost 4-0.
Ethiopia are two times AFCON Finalists making it to the final in 1957 and 1962.
Ethiopia were AFCON Champions in 1962 defeating Egypt 4-2 after extra time in the final.
Mengistu Worku is Ethiopia’s all time top scorer at the AFCON tournament netting 10 goals over the six tournaments he participated in. His six tournament participations is also the most by an Ethiopian player in the tournament.

Ethiopia’s three wins in their opening games of an AFCON tournament have all come on home soil in 1962, 1968 and 1976 against Tunisia and then twice against Uganda.
Ethiopia have lost their first game of an AFCON tournament by a two goal margin or greater on six occasions.
Ethiopia’s only opening game of an AFCON tournament to end in a draw was their opening game in 2013 against Zambia which ended 1-1.

During qualifying for the 2021 AFCON six players scored Ethiopia’s 10 goals, with Getaneh Kebede emerging as their top scorer with three goals.
Shimelis Bekele, Getaneh Kebede are two players who featured for Ethiopia the last time they featured at the AFCON in 2013.
