Vieira to set up academy (22.10.2001)
Arsenal and France midfielder Patrick Vieira has announced plans to set up a football academy in his country of birth, Senegal.
Vieira has been joined in the project by the former French international goalkeeper Bernard Lama.
Ex- Lens star Jean-Marx Adjovi-Boco, who is originally from the West African country of Benin, has also decided to back Vieira`s dream.
The academy, to be known as Diambars (`champions` in Senegal`s main language of Wolof), will be based in Saly Portudal, a popular beach resort 80km from the capital Dakar.
Academic education
The interns will benefit from 4 full-sized pitches, a fully equipped gymnasium and a treatment room as well as classrooms and a library.
The academy`s three famous founders insist that the academic education its pupils will receive is every bit as important as the football skills they will learn.
The pupils will be given a thorough grounding in mathematics,

science, languages and internet technology, to enable them to earn a decent living should they fail to make the grade as professional footballers.
"This project is for all those who, like us, would like to contribute to the development of football in Africa," says Adjovi-Boco on the Diambars.com website.
Stiff competition
Prospective trainees at Diambars will have to pass a demanding series of selection days, training camps as well as physical, technical and psychological aptitude tests.
Youngsters at the centre will have their CVs posted on the internet to attract professional clubs on the lookout for young talent.
However, the academy faces stiff competition as there are already more than 160 such football schools in Senegal.
The project does have some weighty backers, though, having received support from UNESCO, the French and Senegalese governments, and a variety of French and Senegalese private investors.
