Iván Helguera has warned Samuel Eto’o to expect a hostile reception when Barcelona travel to Real Madrid after the Cameroon striker’s chant during the Catalan side’s title celebrations last season.
As the first first clásico of the season approaches tension is high in both camps and Helguera believes that Eto’o will bear the brunt of Madrid fans’ ire following his outburst.
The former Bernabéu striker struck up a chant that insulted Madrid when it was his turn to make a speech at Barça’s party to present the league championship trophy to the fans.
"He will get
whistled a lot," said Helguera.
"In fact, he’ll get the same reception that Figo got in the Camp Nou," he said, referring to the vociferous and unfriendly welcome given to the Portuguese winger after he had made the switch from Barcelona to their fiercest rivals in 2000.
"Saying that, I don’t think he’ll get a pig’s head thrown at him."
Eto’o did apoligise for his outburst and many in Madrid forgave him and Helguera acknowledged that there was no ill feeling from any of the Real players.
"He’s a good lad, a bid mad, but a good person," he said. "What he said slipped out, but he apologised the day after and that’s why I don’t think we have to bear it in mind."
