Lions Sharpen Claws (29.08.2005)
The final training camp of the Indomitable Lions ahead of next Sunday’s crucial encounter began yesterday.
Some ten days after the first training camp in Lisses, France, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon began their last session yesterday ahead of next Sunday’s crucial match against the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire. The day nine encounter in the on-going 2006 World Cup/African Cup of Nations qualifying series, will be played at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny stadium, Abidjan. It will be a "must win" expedition for Cameroon judging from the stakes.
The Lions, who are second in Group Three with 17 points, must beat the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire, Group leaders with 19 points, to move a step towards qualifying for Germany 2006. In effect, Cameroon will also have to beat Egypt on October 11 in Yaounde to grab their qualification ticket for Germany as only the leader of each group will compete in the 2006 World Cup, while the top three will qualify for the 2006 Nations Cup.
It is therefore understandable why all hands are on deck to ensure that the lions train in complete serenity. On the request of the players, the camping site was changed from Centre Leonard de Vinci, Lisses, to Nouvotel Saint Cantin, still in the outskirts (40 kilometres) of Paris. This was to ensure greater serenity in the Lion’s den. At press time yesterday, just a handful of players had answered present with Benoit Angbwa being the first on the roll. Understandably so because some of the players had competitions yesterday.
Most Cameroonians are anxious to know whether Etame Mayer and Raymond Kalla, called up to reinforce Cameroon’s defence, will take part in the present training camp. The Director of the administrative unit of the team says Kalla and Etame, like all the players invited,
are expected to take part in the training.
Today, the Lions will effectively get down to work. As was the case during the last training camp, the team will train twice each day at 10:00am and at 4:00pm. If we have to go by the declaration of head coach Artur Jorge, emphasis will be laid on all aspects of the game — attack, defence, group cohesion, etc. In all there will be seven training sessions. Captain Song and his mates, officials of Cameroon Football Federation and the coaches, will grant a press conference on Wednesday.
As of now, no case of injury has been recorded in the Lion’s camp. Armand Deumi, who could not take part actively in the last training camp is back in good shape. His physician says he is physically fit. Meanwhile, all is being done to make the players at ease. On arrival, each player is handed a training kit (shirts, shorts and stockings) and participation allowance. In effect, no stone will be left unturned in the preparations for next Sunday’s decisive match.
The Minister of Sports and Physical Education who is heading Cameroon’s delegation to the training camp is expected to visit the players at their camping site today evening. The training camp ends on September 02 when the team leaves Paris for Côte d’Ivoire, with a one hour stop over at the Yaounde Nsimalen Airport. The delegation will be joined by five former Lions of the squad that eliminated hosts, Côte d’Ivoire, at the semi final during the 1984 African Cup of Nations. The presence of Bell Joseph Antoine, Théophile Abega, Bonaventure Djonkep, François Omam Biyick and Akono Jean Paul, the technician behind the Olympic gold medal in Sydney in 2000, will be a great moral booster to the players. Hopefully, these old hands will teach the new generation how to resolve the Ivorian equation.
