Ex-Bochum defender Kalla gets suspended sentence over tax charge
Bochum, Germany - Former Bochum player Raymond Kalla was given a suspended 20-month prison sentence Thursday after a court in Germany convicted him of tax evasion. The court in Bochum ruled that the 32-year-old Cameroon defender failed to pay tax on 640,000 euros (939,000 dollars) on payments received from VfL Bochum between 2002 and 2004.
The secret payments were declared as commission for an agent but were pocketed by Kalla who is now without a contract.
Kalla, who is now living in Paris, will have to pay 311,000 euros in outstanding tax in the next three years, the court ruled.
Prosecutors said investigations of officials of the Bundesliga club were continuing.
