Hinshelwood given Brighton job
Brighton & Hove Albion have named Martin Hinshelwood as their new manager.
Seagulls chairman Dick Knight promoted the club`s director of youth football after revealing he had interviewed and turned down a World Cup coach for the job, who is rumoured to have been Cameroon`s Winfried Schafer.
Hinshelwood takes over from Peter Taylor, who left after less than a year in the post shortly after the club secured its second successive promotion.
Knight confirmed he had contacted a coach during the World Cup in Japan and South Korea - and held talks with him while on holiday in Spain.
The chairman said: "Why has it taken 11 weeks to appoint a new manager?
"I cast the net very wide. We cast our net all the way to Japan and Korea and one of the managers was, and still is, an international team coach.
"I saw and interviewed some extremely interesting andidates. But I also interviewed Martin, and he has special qualities.
"Martin offers us stability, continuity, hard work, dedication and long-term loyalty.
"He knows the club inside-out and has been very successful in four years as director of youth."
Together with assistant manager Bob Booker, Hinshelwood had been in temporary charge of Brighton before Taylor arrived after Micky Adams had left to join Leicester City.
Then the Brighton duo took charge of the team for two games.
Song of the south
"It all happened very quickly - I`ve signed a two-year contract and I`ll take this opportunity with both hands," said Hinshelwood
"I`m honoured to be manager as we go back into the First Division after a 10-year break.
"It`s a big challenge but I feel we can cope at this level.
"I believe we have the squad to have a very good season."
Hinshelwood has less than four weeks to prepare for Brighton`s first game of their Division One season.
His first test will be Brighton`s opening warm-up friendly, at south coast neighbours Worthing on Tuesday.
