Hibs Bosnian ace begs to play for Nigeria
LAGOS,
Hibernian`s Bosnian defender Alen Orman has asked Nigeria to invite him to join the Super Eagles squad for the African Nations Cup in Mali next month, an official said Thursday.
Patrick Okpomo, Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), told reporters that he had received a letter from the Scottish Premiership player in which he explained that he is married to a Nigerian woman, Jennifer, and wishes to play for his wife`s country.
"I would like to play for my wife`s country as I`m yet to play for Bosnia. I will therefore be happy if the national team like my style. I hope to bring my experience to bear on the team," the 23-year-old Orman said in his letter.
Okpomo said that the NFA board will meet to examine the player`s request.
"I can`t tell off hand whether he can or cannot play for Nigeria. This decision lies with the board which will in turn make recommendations to the government. Besides, the coaches too have to decide whether he can fit into the team," he said.
Nigeria recently announced a 40-man provisional list for the Nations Cup due to kick off January 19 in Bamako. Preparations for the competition will begin December 28.
The Eagles are grouped with host nation Mali, Algeria and Liberia in the first round of the championship, which takes place every two years.
