Germany routs Saudis 8-0; Denmark wins
YOKOHAMA
Africa still is unbeaten at the World Cup. Asia isn`t nearly as fortunate.
Hours after upstart Senegal stunned defending champion France to begin the tournament, Cameroon tied Ireland 1-1 Saturday (Saturday morning EDT). It wasn`t quite the captivating result as in the opener, but it added fuel to the belief African soccer is catching up with other continents.
Saudi Arabia isn`t catching up with anyone. Germany scored the most goals in a Cup finals game since 1982 in routing the Saudis 8-0. Miroslav Klose scored three as the Germans connected four times in each half at Sapporo, Japan.
That made for a good day for Europe -- Denmark edged Uruguay 2-1 at Ulsan, South Korea.
Matt Holland scored in the 52nd minute as Ireland rallied at Niigata, the first tournament game played in Japan. This is the first World Cup staged in Asia and held in two countries.
``Hopefully it will stand us in good state,`` Holland said. ``It was a crucial result today that we didn`t get beat.``
Cameroon took the lead late in the first half when Samuel Eto`o broke down the right side, skipped around Steve Staunton and cut the ball back to Patrick Mboma, who scored from 8 yards.
Denmark, got two goals from Jon Dahl Tomasson. He headed in the winner in the 83rd minute.
``Everybody knows the first game is very important in a World Cup for your confidence, and I think we deserved to win it,`` Denmark coach Morten Olsen said. ``Physically, we were the better team.``
The United States gets started Wednesday against Portugal at Suwon, South Korea. All of the American players practiced Saturday after goalkeeper Kasey Keller and midfielders Claudio Reyna and John O`Brien skipped the last training session on Thursday with minor injuries.
France could have star midfielder Zinedine Zidane (torn thigh muscle) back for the next game Thursday against Uruguay -- and will need him. The defending champions are in a precarious spot after their shocking loss to Senegal and can`t afford to slip against the South Americans.
``It isn`t impossible that he will play against Uruguay, but we won`t take any risks,`` team doctor Jean-Marcel Ferret said. ``There will be a return to the training field and he will have to start showing he can turn and accelerate.``
French coach Roger Lemerre was less optimistic.
``I would be surprised if Zidane came back for the match against Uruguay,`` the French coach said. ``The squad is waiting for his return. There is no dependence on Zidane. We depend on ourselves and not on him.``
Senegal`s victory, mirroring the achievement of Cameroon in the 1990 opener vs. Argentina, made headlines around the world.
``French fried in opening stunner,`` said Britain`s Sun newspaper, a traditional enemy of anything French.
``The global order has been turned upside down,`` Britain`s Guardian proclaimed.
``It was a great day for soccer to see an African team like Senegal beat France,`` U.S. defender Jeff Agoos said.
``That`s good for soccer, because it shows that if you`re willing to fight for 90 minutes like Senegal did, you can achieve a result that few people expected,`` said China coach Milutinovic, who guided the U.S. team to the second round in 1994.
French president Jacques Chirac spoke by telephone with captain Marcel Desailly and Lemerre to encourage them to ``go beyond this failure and mobilize for coming matches.``
Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa pulled a mild surprise Saturday when he selected longtime national team striker Gabriel Batistuta to start Sunday against Nigeria. Batistuta, who said he will retire from international soccer after this tournament, was picked ahead of Hernan Crespo -- even though Batistuta, 33, comes off a poor season in Italy. Crespo had nine goals in Argentina`s brilliant qualifying run.
But Batistuta is Argentina`s most prolific scorer with 55 goals in 75 games.
``I am optimistic because I believe in my players,`` Bielsa said. ``Their abilities have been proven.``
Japanese police arrested a Northern Irish jeweler Saturday for scalping a World Cup ticket outside the Ireland-Cameroon game. John Jones, 43, was trying to sell a ticket for $160 outside Niigata Stadium.
Two more England supporters with a history of hooliganism were turned back at the airport trying to enter Japan. All told, 20 Britons had been refused entry as of Saturday, the British Embassy said.Hits: 1 | Source:Yahoo
