Hayatou joins in Foe grief
The president of the African Football Confederation (Caf) Issa Hayatou is "terribly shocked" by the tragic death of Cameroonian midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe, according to a statement.
Cameroon-born Mr Hayatou was present at Lyon´s Gerland Stadium where Foe collapsed and died during the Indomitable Lions´ Confederations Cup semi-final game against Colombia.
The statement, which was released from Caf´s headquarters in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, after the game, was a tribute from the African body to the entire football fraternity, including Manchester City and the Cameroon FA.
Hayatou, a former Cameroon FA boss, hails from Garoua, the city where Foe made his debut in club football.
The Caf president is known to have spoken highly of the 28-year-old Foe for his sportsmanly behaviour and example to African younth.
Although Hayatou was emotionally touched by the Manchester City midfielder´s sudden death, he recovered quickly and was able to convince the Lions to play Sunday´s final against France.
Caf might consider giving Marc-Vivien Foe a befitting farewell, but officials will have to consider the proposal in one of its future executive meetings.
