Indomitable Lions reassured by sports minister
Martin Etonge
The minister of youth and sports, Bidoung Mpkatt has recommended loyalty, patriotism and total confidence on football managers to players of the national team.
The minister was speaking during a meeting with the players invited for a training camp in Yaounde. Also in the meeting were football authorities, including Fecafoot officials.
The minister called for the coaches to make sure discipline reigned in the squad.
The meeting was holding against the backdrop of the dismal World Cup performance and the subsequent decision of the authorities to overhaul the team.
The decision to overhaul was not very welcomed by the players. Bidoung Mpkatt said during the meeting that it was one to enable the players regain confidence and quietness ‘to avoid the crisis of the past’, and work for more victories for Cameroon.
Head coach Winnie Schafer said the meeting was badly needed in order for ‘us not to wash our dirty linen in public’.
He said he wanted a new working spirit to come out of the meeting. But regretted that not all the players summoned to camp were present.
Ten of them, including Patrick Mboma, Raymond Kalla, Alioum Boukar, Bernard Tchoutang and Patrick Suffo were absent. While Canon’s goalkeeper, Mbarga was added following his great show in their league game against Canon on Sunday.
Skipper Song said some players were not released by their clubs, while others, like goalkeeper Charles Itanje were recovering from injury.
Schafer was impressed with the output of newcomers Herve Tum, Cyrille Bella and Mbarga.
