to culminate in the event billed for Abuja, Nigeria from October 03 to 18, 2003.
The continental multi-sports games involving all independent African countries kicks off in Abuja, Nigeria on October 03, 2003. The event, held every four years, can be considered Africa’s Olympics. Since its introduction in 1965 in Brazzaville, Congo, the number of events, participating countries and athletes have steadily increased with each edition.
Some 53 countries, 6,000 athletes, 1,200 officials, 1,500 journalists and 2,000 VIPs are expected at the 8th edition in Abuja. The athletes will be competing in 23 sports events including aquatics, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, chess, gymnastics, handball, hockey, softball, table tennis, taekwondo, baseball, football, squash racquets, cycling, weightlifting, wrestling, special sports, judo, volleyball and karate. Cameroon will be sending in athletes in 17 disciplines.
Judging the importance of the event to the country, the National Bilingual Daily, Cameroon Tribune will, as from today, launch a series that will culminate with the Games. The series will seek to appraise the state of preparedness of the different sports disciplines selected by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to represent the country as well as evaluate the chances of Cameroon’s athletes to grab medals.
To the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Charge of Youths, Denis Oumarou, the Cameroonian delegation will not be going to Abuja for tourism. "It’s another occasion to prove our strength in the sports domain", he told participants at the fifth preparatory meeting for the games yesterday in Yaounde. Good performance, he said, will mean judicious selection of athletes and more emphasis on training. "The choice of athletes have to be based on their performance, not family ties or friendship", he warned.
