Beijing 2008 : Cameroon Team in High Spirits
TCHE Irene MORIKANG
The Olympic delegation of Cameroon held its flag-raising ceremony yesterday.
The sweet melody of Cameroon’s national anthem echoed yesterday in the Olympic village in Beijing, China. It was an occasion for members of the official delegation to demonstrate their love for fatherland as they proudly waved the national colours. Besides the President of the National Olympic and Sports Committee, Kalkaba Malboum and the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Augustin Edjoa, other dignitaries such as the Government Delegate to the Yaounde Urban Council, Tsimi Evouna and the Roving Ambassador, Roger Milla, joined their voices in singing “O Cameroon”.
The enthusiasm observed in the ranks of Cameroon’s official delegation will definitely be of great help as the athletes get into action. Already, the footballers were yesterday spurred to a one all tie against their South Korean counterparts during the country’s first outing at the Games in the Chinese town of Qinhuangdao. The official opening of the world’s greatest sports event today will spring the doors open for a 16-day sports jamboree with Cameroonians featuring in nine disciplines.
As the other Cameroonian athletes get into action progressively, their heads are high. They are confident! After all, it’s not by favour that they are in Beijing. They all realised the minimum performance in their different disciplines. What more, they are aware that the entire nation is with them. This was evident in the grandiose ceremony in Yaounde Presided by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Ephraim Inoni to bid the team farewell.
The financial and moral actions that have been taken by the government to ensure that the athletes prepare well for the competition also testify to the overwhelming support for the Cameroon Olympic Team. From all indications, what President Paul Biya told the Indomitable Lions in March 2002 during a reception at the Unity Palace more than holds today. Said he: “As you have shown in the past, we know you are able to make other great achievements, reassured that the entire country will stand behind you to facilitate your job”.
