Rowing: Etia Ndoumbe Says Best is Yet to Come
TCHE Irene MORIKANG
The athlete last Saturday qualified for the first round semis of the male single scull event.
Rowing events at the Beijing Olympics got underway with heats in “Group A” last Saturday. The water remained perfectly flat at the Shunyi regatta course with a slight head wind that increased an hour into racing then dropped away. Paul Etia Ndoumbe, who is representing Cameroon in the male single scull event, is definitely not yet in the hall of fame of the discipline. But he has got faith in what he does. The 24-year-old last Saturday had his baptism of fire in the Olympics; rubbing shoulders with world top male scullers; those who call the shots in the discipline.
The young athlete succeeded to move to the semis of the first round in his event after finishing the heats in the 5th position; covering the 2000m in 07:59.26. It was an elated sculler who talked to us shortly after the competition. “I am motivated and in great form. The event was difficult. But I can assure you that I am not yet at my best. I still have more to offer”, Paul Etia Ndoumbe said.
The semis of the first round are expected to take place today. If Etia Ndoumbe succeeds to go through, he can eventually be among those to make their countries proud on August 17, day of the final. Great surprise indeed it will be for Cameroon!
The Male Single scull (M1x) is just one of the 14 Olympic Rowing events in Beijing. Some 550 athletes, 192 women and 358 men are gunning for gold in the different Rowing events.
