Zimbabwe take control
Albert Mbano made a belated but fairytale start to his international career, scoring on debut as Zimbabwe won the first leg of the Cosafa Cup final 2-1in Malawi.
The 33-year-old striker was drafted in as a late replacement after Zimbabwe failed to get clearance for Peter and Adam Ndlovu.
The strike force could not get clearance from their respective clubs to play in the final.
Mbano´s clubmate and fellow debutant Zvenyika Makonese got the other goal to set Zimbabwe on their way to the title.
Mbano took his opportunity with both hands to claim the man of the match award for his goal in the seventh minute.
He rose above the opposing defence to head home, using his height and physical presence to tower above a static home backline.
The goal came after a corner from Charles Yohane.
The same player delivered another corner that Makonese headed home from close range as Malawi goalkeeper Philip Nyasulu was left floundering in the 57th minute.
Mbano should have had another in the second half when he broke clear from the defence.
But a push from behind by Malawi defender Allan Kamanga inexplicably went Malawi´s way and Mbano limped out of the game.
Malawi created a myriad of chances in a storming last 20 minutes and deservedly pulled one goal back when Russell Mwafulirwa´s header caught the eccentric Zimbabwean goalkeeper Energy Murambadoro out of position.
Essau Kanyenda and John Maduka had chances to equalise in a dramatic finish as Malawi pushed forward, roared on by a capacity 60,000-strong crowd.
Malawi will now have to win by two clear goals in Harare in the second leg on 5 October to take the trophy.
But Zimbabwe look best bets for their second triumph in three years in the annual southern African championship.
