Foot: Division 1 New-Look Kicks-Off in Douala
The opening encounter, which pitted K.S.A to Cotonsport, ended on a virgin tie.
The 45th edition of national elite championship kicked-off last Saturday at the Reunification stadium in Douala without any pomp and fanfare. No dance group was invited or ceremony organised to boost the occasion. The only few noises heard here and there came from a handful of very passionate Kadji Sports Academy supporters who had travelled in from Bikoko to cheer their darling team. The over five thousand spectators who had turned out to witness the first match of the much talked about football reforms in the country were very disappointed with the way the Cameroon Football Fedearation (FECAFOOT), handled the start of the 2003 — 2004 season. A well documented colourful press kit, presented by officials of Kadji Sports Academy, was the only tangible object to testify the start of the championship. Not even a banner or bill board was found on the field, while the ball boys were poorly dressed.
From the blast of the referee’s whistle, both teams started to attack with Cotonsport putting up a very brilliant show at the flanks where left half back Kibong succeeded several times to over lap his oppenent before making an over head cross which neither Hamadou nor Bebe could push into goalkeeper Tombe’s net. After a fruitless first quarter dominated by the current champions of Cameroon, the attackers of both sides went into slumber as play mostly centred around the midfield where a huge battle for ball possesion pitted Tchango, Makadji and Ali Gambo for Cotonsport to Collince, Simo and Mbella for K.S.A. These physical and technical battle, which several times resulted to inacurate passes and a catalogue of misses, rounded up the first half.
Cotonsport dressed all green and K.S.A in white, returned to the turff visibly determined to grab the first three points of the season. At the 46th minute, the boys from the football school in Bikoko came close to opening scores, but the beautiful over head cross from Chameni was poorly negotiated by number 9, Bani, who came in for number 18 Nkuwu. Two minutes later, it was Cotonsport that was on the move with a swift man-to-man ball control which Ali Gambo short just a few centimetres off target.
Despite these few moves both coaches seemed not satisfied with the evolution of play and thus decided to bring in new men at the midfield and attack. The changes saw Bitus, Amongwa and ball joggler Dikoume freshly from Canon Yaounde making their entry for Cotonsport while number 17 Imondes took the place of number 11 Bakor for K.SA. Though their entry brough some life into the match, it did not however result to the much awaited curtain raiser as the encounter ended on a zero all tie.
