Feminine Football: Louves Win Cup of Cameroon
Many fans and supporters turned out to watch the finals last Saturday.
It was an exciting weekend for adepts of football in the capital city. The event was the final of the 2005 edition of the female football Cup of Cameroon last Saturday. The final pitched Louves of Yaounde against Ngondi Nkam of Yabassi.
As early as 1:00pm fans and supporters trooped to the Yaounde military stadium to secure seats in order not to miss any part of the event. The gates of the military stadium were flung wide open to give many spectators a chance to watch the ladies show just what they can do in football. Traditional dance groups from the Centre Province and the University of Yaounde 1 brass band animated the occasion. Present to encourage the players was the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Philippe Mbarga Mboa, and the Minister of Women and Family Promotion, Suzanne Bomback.
Kick-off at 3:00pm by the Minister of Women and Family Promotion gave way for the start of hostilities. It was an encounter that produced a lot of fireworks as each team was determined not only to win but to have the privilege of receiving the trophy from the Head of State. From the kick-off, Louves mounted much pressure on Ngondi Nkam with their fantastic play style but they squandered their scoring opportunities. Ngondi Nkam’s defence was vigilant and was able to ward off any attack by Louves.
At the 40th minute, Manga (11) of Ngondi Nkam sent in the curtain raiser after benefiting from a corner kick from Tchebayou (3). Fans and supporters went wild with joy but their joy was not for long as Anaba (13) equalised for Louves at the 41st minute through a penalty. Half time score was 1-1. Ngondi Nkam came in to the second half much stronger but could not stand the pressure of Louves. Efforts by both sides to increase tally were futile. At stoppage time the score margin was 1-1. After the prolongations the score line remained the same. Penalty kicks was the only way to separate the two teams. Louves Yaounde emerged winners beating Ngondi Nkam 4-1.
According to the coach of Louves Charles Mussongo, the team has been able to make it this time due to solidarity that reigns within the team and hard work. As for the coach of Ngondi Nkam, Jojo Ondobo the team is made up of young players who are still learning. He however promised to work harder next year. The Minister of Women and Family Promotion said that the performance of the players is evident that feminine football has come of age in the country. She however said much still needs to be done.
