University Games: Violence Mars Football Match
Yesterday, the football match between UB and University of Douala, ended in confusion.
The 9th University Games in Buea enter day four today with an early morning Basket-ball match between the girls of the Universities of Yaounde I and II. Host UB will log horns with visiting Catholic University of Central Africa from Yaounde at 10 am.
The first case of indisscipline was recorded yesterday as the second football match between UB and University of Douala ended in confusion. Buea was leading 1-0 when spectators invaded the stadium following Douala`s equaliser. Following the football incident UB`s security Chief, Samuel Njume said his men were combing the campus minute by minute to secure property and life and save the reputation of the Institution. University of Buea authorities are also putting extra efforts to ensure that such situations do not arise again to mar the Games. UB, the place to be has to prove that it is worthy of that consideration
The first games in Judo will surface today in both girls and boys categories below 48kg and below 60kg respectively.
The Games are still to pull crowds as potential spectators appear to be waiting for semis and finals to rush to the various Games venue. Some students and members of delegations were seen yesterday around the UB campus admiring its cleanliness and hardly went to any pitch to watch the Games. Accommodation is already signalling great difficulties as some officials living in 18km far-away Limbe have experienced lateness getting to the pitch. Some hotels in Buea were reported to have requested payment before checking in some of the delegations.
UB`s Vice Chancellor expressed satisfaction with the show his boys put up on the first day in football against INJS. UB, however overturned its football defeat beating INJS in volleyball by 3 sets to zero Sunday. Buea equally won the University of Douala in the 84kg boys wrestling.
Business activities surrounding the Buea Games seem to attract more attention than the real matches. Visitors are having their full pleasure in food, drinks and other shopping activities. The picture remains unclear as to which of the Universities will win the fair play trophy this year. In Dschang, none of the institutions won the trophy. As it were "a University must also be a repository of fair play in addition to Knowledge", an official voiced out in the UB Campus yesterday.
