Cameroonians United for Victory
The objective is to perform better than in Abuja 2003.
The Cameroonian sports delegation in Algiers for the ninth edition of the All Africa Games has one objective. That is, to achieve better results than in Abuja 2003. Even though authorities from Cameroon who are present in Algiers are doing everything to ensure a smooth participation for the athletes, all does not seem to function as expected.
Since the start of the All Africa Games, the most athletes in the Cameroonians delegation still complain of lack of equipment to enable them compete smoothly. The athletes and some officials have had a long list of grievances concerning their outfit for the various competitions. The delegation members also complain of lack of training equipment for the athletes. Some of the teams came to Algiers without jerseys to compete with. Teams such as the basketball squad had to rent jerseys in Algiers at 3000 dinars per match (about CFA 13,000) to enable them compete. Officials of the Cameroon Handball Federation (FECAHAND) also have to run around in search of jerseys in Algiers before Cameroon can take part in the handball tournament. Officials of the rowing federation lack the means to paint their canoes before competition.
The athletes and officials have equally complained of the lodging and feeding conditions which according to them are inappropriate. Others say officials from the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education leading them in Algiers have simply reacted arrogantly to their complains
However, Colonel Kalkaba Malboum who is the head of delegation for Cameroon held a meeting with the press last Sunday night at their El Medhi residence in Algiers. Colonel Kalkaba congratulated the press for their job and called on them to be objective in their reporting. He said it is the duty of all to save the image of Cameroon while in Algiers and to work together for athletes from Cameroon to be successful in the Games.
Concerning the outfit for the delegations, Colonel Kalkaba promised that the delegation will be in possession of the outfit yesterday. He said the Ministry of sports and Physical Education is living no stone unturned to ensure that the needs of athletes and officials are met. Apart from holding a meeting with the press, Colonel Kalkaba has also paid several visits to the different sports federations present in all the four towns of the competition to extend to them government’s message of encouragement.
