Cotonsport and Racing emerge first round winners
Martin Etonge
While Cotonsport Garoua are properly defending the title they won last season, Racing Bafoussam have come up to be front-runners after years of mediocrity.
Cotonsport comforted their lead in Pool A at the end of the first round on Sunday with an overwhelming 5-0 win at home over Cintra Yaounde. The star of the day was Bebbe Mbangue who netted four goals alone.
Cotonsport then finished round one with 20 points, three clear of runners up Fovu Baham who punished Mount Cameroon FC 1-0 in Buea. Thanks to their 1-0 win over Tonnerre Yaounde, Sable are just a point below neighbors Fovu.
That is how tight the top of the pool is. If the first phase of the season were to end now then only Mount Cameroon who are a distant fourth with 10 points will join the other three for the Super League.
Cintra and Unisport Bafang who managed a two all draw with Dand University FC in Ngaoundere are bottom of the pool with 5 points each.
The big game of the day was that between Pool B leaders Racing and runners up Canon in Yaounde. The match ended 1-0 in favour of the visitors and helped Racing widen the gap on top of the pool to 7 points.
Lead by veteran coach Jules Nyougha, Racing have recovered their lost glory. In eight games they conceded no goal and therefore no defeat. Their six wins and two draws offer them 20 points.
In spite of the Sunday’s 1-0 lose to Racing, Canon keep the second position with 13 points. Canon players blamed the club’s management crisis for the defeat to Racing.
Meantime, Bamboutos Mbouda who started off badly have found their winning form. Though they recorded a one all draw at home with Botafogo AFC Buea, Bamboutos are just two points behind Canon, just like Esperience Guider who also forced a 1-1 draw on Renaissance Ngoumou in Yaounde.
The laughing stocks of the championship are PWD Bamenda who are the exact opposite of their last year form. PWD lost again at the weekend 0-2 to hosts Victoria United this time.
The win helped United push down PWD to the bottom position with 7 points from two wins and a draw. The season is also not good for United despite the win they have 8 points.
Another surprise has come from old boys Union Douala. Union who have always played a front stage role are a shadow of themselves, having just 8 points like Victoria United.
With continental club games this weekend, the domestic league will resume in May.
