Mboma can fire us to safety - Phillips
Kevin Phillips is backing Patrick Mboma to be a big hit on Wearside and believes the added competition will see Sunderland ease to safety.
Cameroon star Mboma made his Black Cats debut as a substitute in Sunday`s Tyne-Wear derby defeat at the hands of Newcastle but failed to make a big impression as Shay Given kept him and Phillips at bay with a stunning man-of-the-match display.
Phillips told TEAMtalk: "I feel sorry for Patrick (Mboma). It was a tough match to come in to and try and make an impression. Those games are never great games and they`re played at 100 miles an hour. Apart from their keeper, we`d have won the game."
England international Phillips insists Mboma will prove his worth at the Stadium of Light and help Peter Reid`s men secure their Premiership status for another season.
Phillips added: "What he did, he did well but I`m sure you`ll see the best of Patrick over the next two or three games.
"I was surprised to see him come on to be honest. I don`t think there`s anything wrong with Niall (Quinn) but that`s the manager`s decision and he obviously wanted to give Patrick long enough to try and make an impression.
"It`s good to have competition and hopefully that will pay off in the next few weeks."
Mboma is on a loan at Sunderland from Parma until the end of the season and is expected to seal a permanent move to the club in the summer.Hits: 1 | Source:Teamtalk
