Africa`s World Cup hopes on track
With a week to go to the kick-off, Africa`s World Cup representatives are shaping up nicely for the finals in the Far East.
After The Super Eagles of Nigeria maintained their unbeaten run with a 2-2 draw against Japanese club Yokohama, Senegal and South Africa yesterday registered morale-boosting victories.
Benni McCarthy and Lucas Radebe showed sparkling form in Hong Kong as the Bafana Bafana defeated Turkey 2-0 to clinch the Reunification trophy in a four-nation tournament. It was South Africa`s second consecutive win.
They beat Scotland by the same margin earlier in the week and elated coach Jomo Sono said: "I did say serious business would start when we get down here. I am happy the way things are shaping up. I am really impressed by some players` commitment and hard work."
Radebe came out tops in duels with Turkey`s star striker Hakan Sukur while McCarthy came off the bench to score the two goals in the second half.
Senegal meanwhile sent warning signals with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador. Striker El Hadj Diouf confirmed his rating with the lone goal in the 69th minute.
The victory obliterated the memory of Senegal`s 3-2 loss to Saudi Arabia last week and coach Bruno Metsu is upbeat about his team`s chances next Friday against world champions France.
He said: "This was a good test to see how far we stand and I am happy we are doing just fine."
Cameroon`s Indomitable Lions will take on England on Sunday after a long journey spanning over 60 hours. The Lions landed in Japan yesterday five days behind schedule.Hits: 1 | Source:Teamtalk
