PWD Bamenda soften grib on first position
By Martin Etonge in Yaounde
For the first time since the 43rd national division one football season started, PWD Bamenda can not boast of the premier position.
Following their 0-2 defeat from Union Douala in day 12 action on Saturday and a surprise 1-0 away win of Coton Sport Garoua over Bamboutos Mbouda, PWD have lost that place on the table. Though just by goal disadvantage.
An exceptional Union Douala contained the fighting spirit of the Abakwa boys in Douala. Somen a Choyi and Romuald Ebouele made the difference with a goal in each half.
The defeat leaves PWD with 23 points, equal to those of Coton Sport. The Coton Sport show silenced critics in Mbouda with a lone goal from Ali Hassan with 25 minutes to go. But Coton Sport stand above PWD thanks to both the technical and goal advantages. Coton Sport had edged PWD 1-0 in day 8 and have plus 8 goals, while PWD have plus 3 goals.
Coton Sport’s win was enough moral booster, a week before their away continental cracker against Maranatha Fiokpo in Togo.
On the contrary, fans of PWD are worried the defeat may signal the beginning of the poor run of the club. After six consecutive victories, PWD have won only one of the last six games, drawn two and lost three. It is the start of trial moments of the PWD house.
Meantime, in other day 12 actions that started on Thursday, Mount Cameroon recorded their second straight win. They edged Sable Batie 1-0 in Buea to the delight of fans who are still waiting to see their team play a more active role in the championship.
The win of the day went to Canon Yaounde who blasted city rivals Cintra 6-0. It was the best win recorded so far in the season and a blow to the ego of Cintra who have been pace setters in the leagues.
Tonnerre on their part abandoned the bottom position thanks to an intricate 1-0 victory over Renaissance in Yaounde. With 11 points they jumped two places over Stade and Sable, but remain in the red zone.
The win offered an opportunity to the outspoken chairman of Tonnerre, Antoine Essomba Eyenga to blast his enemies who want his head.
Other day 12 results:
Victoria United Vs Unisport 1-0
Sable Vs Caiman 1-1
